The Lesser Dead is set in New York City in 1978. Gritty, dirty,
sexy New York City. Add vampires. Our narrator is Joseph Peacock,
nearly 70 years old but with the appearance of a 14-year-old. Joseph
lives with a group of vampires, led by Margaret who turned him. They
live underground in abandoned subway stations; their lives are pretty
ordinary as far as being vampires goes. Then, things get complicated
as a pack of young children vampires emerge on the scene. The
children aren't following the rules, endangering all the other
vampires. Margaret wants the vampire children killed, but the rest of
group aren't so sure. They try to capture the children to watch over
them, and that doesn't quite go as planned. To say the least. I found
Joseph to be a wonderful narrator. He goes back and forth in time,
to explain how he and his group exist. He gets distracted, and
includes articles to help explain his story. He is brash and
innocent. I found him fascinating. The Lesser Dead is an excellent
vampire tale, the tone is witty, while not glossing over what
vampires have to do to exist. As vampires novels go, this is a must
